The Rain and Book Club

The rain finally stopped! They said it was the wettest February on record for our area. This was the view out the back door:

Last night was book club. I ended up just putting together a cheese tray and calling it done! And I got lots of compliments, so I guess it wasn't too bad.

We read this book for this month:
It was really good! It was a quick read and I really hated when I was finished! I highly recommend it!

My choice for next month is:
I've heard good things about it and one of the girls in the group had just started reading it and said so far she really liked it,
So if you are looking for something to read, you should check these out!

What's Up With This Weather?

It's raining, again.
I guess I should be happy, they say we really need it. At least yesterday we had a break and it was sunny and almost 70º.
I do get a lot more done around the house when the weather is yucky!
Teen son worked ALL weekend! Which I guess is a good thing, it keeps him busy and out of trouble!
Saturday was a rainy mess, so we stayed home and watched movies.
I am making Honey Lime Enchiladas for supper tonight. I love THIS recipe!
Tomorrow night I have book club at my house. We read Wild by Cheryl Strayed. It was a very good read. It's about a woman who decides to hike the PCT (Pacific Coast Trail) and does it alone! Read it, you'll enjoy it! I still haven't decided my book pick or what I am going to serve to eat. Of course I already have the wine and beer, I just am at a loss at what food to make. Any ideas before I have to head to the store in the morning?

It's a Cold, Dreary Friday

What a change from yesterday's weather! I worked out at Middleton Place yesterday and it was like springtime. There were blue skies and temps around 65º. We were crazy busy! I think there were two tour buses on the property and all took a house tour. But I love those busy days and sharing my knowledge of Middleton Place with others!
We have a special election coming up next month to fill a US Representative's seat. Our crazy senator, Jim DeMint, quit at the end of the year so our governor appointed our US representative to fill his empty seat, so now we have a special election to fill the Rep's seat! Anyway, one of my friends works at the polls and asked if I was interested in working this election. I said sure, so I had to attend a training session on Tuesday night. Kind of boring, but I am looking forward to working the election! Plus, we do get paid!
My MIL called yesterday and her brother has to have a triple by-pass on Monday! So, if you are the praying type, please say a little prayer for husband's uncle. MIL is very upset, I think because they just lost their mother suddenly last month and now this!
I am planning a little getaway to our lake house next weekend. A few of my girlfriends up there are planning to gather with no husbands or kids. So I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can pull this off! ;)
Hope you have wonderful plans for the weekend!

Happy President's Day

No school today, which was kind of nice. I made the teens homemade doughnuts for a special treat for breakfast.
Teen son started his new job yesterday. He had to be there at 6:00 am! He is working at Dollar General. I have only been in there a handful of times, but they were hiring, and it's not even a mile from our house, so we are pleased. He is mostly stocking shelves and unloading the trucks that come in.
His first day of work:
They have to wear black pants and a black polo style shirt.
He has to work from noon until 4:00 today.

Since he is a senior and gets out of school in the morning each day,  I am glad that he has something constructive to fill his spare time! Plus we have told him that he needs to save about half of his pay each week so he will have spending money next year in college. What his dad and I feel is adequate spending money will not be adequate to him and this way he can supplement what we give him.

Husband and I went to see the movie Side Effects yesterday. I liked it, husband just thought it was alright.

Last week husband was awarded his 2nd Dan certificate at Taekwondo. He tested for his second degree black belt back at the end of December and the certificates just came back.
Not bad for an almost 50 year old! :)

Hope you are enjoying this President's Day!

Getting Ready for The Weekend

Well I hope everyone had the Valentine's Day that you hoped for! We did the card thing and then ate the wonderful dinner I prepared. Let me just say, those lobster tails.... to die for!

No school on Monday, so I thought it would be the perfect weekend to head north to our little house in the hills. Unfortunately those plans had to be canned since teen son just got a job! (Which I am loving! He needs to start earning some money and doing something constructive with his extra time!) And his first day is Sunday. And we don't dare leave him home alone. So, I guess we have a very low key weekend planned. It's supposed to be pretty cool here so maybe we'll go see a movie. Any suggestions?

Happy Valentine's Day

We are not big celebrators of Valentine's Day in our house. I tend to do more on this day for the kids than husband. And I do this because husband and I do sweet, loving things for each other all through out the year. I don't need something on a day that the greeting card and floral industry has determined I do! We gave up going out for dinner on Valentine's awhile back... I just couldn't deal with the crowds!
So for dinner tonight I will be grilling steaks and lobster tails and preparing some sides to go along. For dessert I made a cake with homemade caramel frosting. And that will be it! And I am just fine with that!
We went to church last night to get ashes. There weren't many people there, I think maybe because there had been four other masses earlier yesterday. I always get so upset when someone's cell phone goes off during mass, I automatically turn mine off as I am walking into church each Sunday. Well last night I sat down and realized the ringer was still on. So I turned it down to vibrate knowing that I rarely get calls on my cell when the family is together. Would you believe that I got not one, but two calls last night! And, if I hadn't remembered to turn the ringer off I would have been one of THOSE people! Haha!
Since we are counting down til big events in our house, teen son has three months from today until his last day of school! I keep reminding him to not screw it up! Say a prayer! ;)
Happy Valentine's Day!

You've Got To Make This

I actually had all the ingredients on hand so I was able to just basically throw it together. And a bonus: it makes a ton of food!
Tomorrow the representative from the foreign exchange organization will be here for the in-home interview. Then tomorrow night is Pokeno with my favorite girls!
Hope your weekend is great!

Signed, Sealed and Delivered!

Teen daughter's foreign exchange program application is done!
It has been submitted and the tuition deposit has been sent. We have an in home interview on Saturday with a representative from the organization.
I can't believe she will be leaving in about 7 months! And then that made me think that teen son will be graduating in about 3 months and two weeks.... I don't know if I am ready for this!

Yea it's Friday!

(Finally got my photo to upload, this is the piece that I got for myself that belonged to my husband's grandmother)

Why is it that when you go to the doctor's office they make you wait FOREVER in that little room for the doctor? I took daughter, this morning,  for a physical that she needs for her application to do the foreign exchange. I figured we would be in and out in less than an hour. The nurse took us back right away and did her little thing. Then we waited for a little over 30 minutes for the doctor to come in. I was beginning to think they had forgotten about us! I love her doctor, she still sees a pediatrician, but geez! I had teen son calling me on my cell wondering where I was since he gets out of school at 10:15 on Fridays and I wasn't there to pick him up.
I hope your weekend is fun-filled and relaxing!
We have a dinner to go to for the neighborhood volunteers tomorrow night and then of course we will watch the super bowl on Sunday, even though we are not big fans of either of the teams playing! I just want to see the commercials!
