Life is Just Rolling Along

Okay, so last week was a busy one! 

Tuesday both teens had dentist appointments at a new dentist. The dentist they had been going to just didn't have a very good bedside manner and neither did the office staff. So, I found a new one that came highly recommended and they also take our dental insurance! The teens were happy, though both now have referrals to an oral surgeon for wisdom teeth removal. And teen daughter's recommendation is to get them removed before she leaves for France in two months! Yikes!

Late Tuesday teen son and I left for the upstate so we could attend his college orientation on Wednesday. We didn't get to our little house in the woods until about 8:30 pm. As soon as I pulled up to the house I noticed one of the blinds on the front door was open. I ALWAYS leave them closed because I don't want anyone to wander up and be able to look in and decide that they would like to break in to take what looks good to them! Now, husband and I haven't been up there since we were up at Christmas time and no one else was supposed to have been there. So, I walk up to the front door and as I get ready to put the key in the lock in the door knob I give it a try first. And it isn't locked! The deadbolt IS locked so the door doesn't open. I am always the last one to come out of the house and so I am the one that locks up. I know that the door knob was locked because I always double check after I have pulled the door closed. Teen son and I walk in and I immediately notice that all the bedroom doors and the bathroom door downstairs are closed! Again, I am the last to leave the house (I am always making one last bathroom stop) and there is no way I would have shut all the doors! In the meantime teen son grabs a big stick he had found the previous summer and had left by the front door and he is walking around holding it like a bat and flinging the doors open. Right before he opens the last door I notice a light coming from under it. When he opens it there is a nightlight, that is from the bathroom, in there and it is on! The last time we were up there was no reason to have a nightlight on in that room because it was just husband and I and we sleep in the upstairs bedroom. Also, we both always go around checking to make sure everything is turned off when we leave. Anyway, to make a long story short, someone had to have been in our house. They weren't there when we got there and they left everything very neat and orderly! I am going to have the locks changed next week and hopefully whoever stayed there won't be able to get back in! Isn't that crazy?!

Orientation was great! Son registered for classes and has his schedule for the fall. He was very impressed with all the cute girls that were there! We were able to take a tour of the apartment complex where all of the students in this particular program live.... it's nicer than any place I lived in the first five years I was married! 

 After orientation was over we headed back to the cabin where we relaxed for awhile and then headed to the clubhouse for dinner. I had an awesome fried haddock with homemade onion rings. We hung out there for awhile before heading back to the house. We watched a movie, that we both had seen before, and then I headed to bed. 

We got home Thursday afternoon. Friday I met some friends for lunch. Saturday was spent catching up on things that had not been done while I was gone. Then that evening I had pokeno night with my girls! It was a lot of fun and the hostess made greek food, which was amazing!

Sunday all four of us went to mass. I think this was the first time in many weeks that we were all able to go. That afternoon husband and I attended a 50th wedding anniversary party for an longtime friend of ours. 

Yesterday I had a staff meeting at Middleton Place. It feels so weird to have a job after not having worked for the last 8 or so years! Last night was book club, which is always fun. We discussed The Stepford Wives,  which was our book for this month. Such a creepy story!

Photo Fail

Would you believe these are the ONLY photos I took when we were at Fripp Island on Saturday? And these were taken while I stood on the porch of the house my family had rented.

We did have a good time though. The weather was perfect! And now I am searching for a house for us to buy on the island! If I can find one cheap enough and convince husband, this will be my new goal! Wish me luck! ;)

This week is going to be a busy one, I am taking one newly graduated son to college orientation after his visit to the dentist tomorrow. So I will be away for the next few days....

It is so dang hot!

I will be the first to tell you that I do not appreciate 97º weather. Especially when it is combined with about 80º humidity! I am not enjoying this time of year. To top it off, my SIL and nephew  brought their 70+ year old neighbor to Charleston, since she had never been here, and of course I told her to come by the house and I would take them out to Middleton Place today.

Man alive, that heat was brutal! 

I had my second day of training yesterday. More sweeping and dusting! Husband asked if this was really something I wanted to do! I told him that I wouldn't normally be doing that but that I need to know how to open the museum on the weekends in case I have to fill in for someone.

Some one is having a big #ss wedding out at MP on Saturday. They started setting up at around sunrise yesterday and today they were still going at it! They have built raised floors that will be under the air-conditioned tents that are still to be erected. Today when I was out there with my family, I noticed they are laying carpet on the flooring! I really want to see what it is going to look like when it is all done, but we'll be gone on Saturday or I would go out there! I heard they are bringing the 200 guests out to the venue from downtown Charleston, on 7 shuttle buses that have been secured for the wedding. And, they made a really big donation to the foundation! 

I finished reading The Stepford Wives for book club. It is so creepy and kind of funny, since it was written in 1972! Now I am reading David Sedaris's latest book,  Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls. Pee in your pants funny! Last night I was reading before I went to sleep and husband kept telling me he was going to take it away from me if I didn't quit laughing so much!

I Finally Figured Out it Was Tuesday

Since the school year has ended I have had a hard time keeping track of my days! I woke up this morning and seriously couldn't remember what day of the week it was. I finally figured out it was Tuesday, which was good since I would have been late for my second day of training at my new job if it had been Wednesday!

This past weekend turned out to be a pretty lazy weekend. The weather was so iffy the whole time. You really couldn't tell from one minute to the next if it was going to rain or if the sun was going to shine!

Husband and I ended up renting 3 movies over the weekend: The Impossible, Promised Land and Silver Linings Playbook. The Impossible was good, but disturbing, especially if you are a mom! It is based on one families real life story of what happened to them on vacation when the tsunami hit back in 2005. Promised Land, was ehh! Silver Linings Playbook was really good. I love anything with Bradley Cooper and this did not disappoint! 

Saturday night we had a date night. We went to our favorite burger joint and since I have reverted to my vegetarian ways, I ordered a grilled cheese! I do love their grilled cheese though! I am sure the waitress thought I was a little strange. Then we went for ice cream, but since I am not a big ice cream fan I got watermelon sorbet, which was fantastic.

Sunday afternoon I spent a little time chatting on facebook with teen daughter's french mom. It is fun to chat, and it makes for some funny sentences since she was using google translator! She seems so nice and I can't wait for daughter's adventure to start!

The rain has kind of stopped, but now it is so hot and sticky outside. This is the weather that I hate the most! My hair which is so thick and naturally curly really looks a mess as soon as I step outside. I am thinking of embracing the curls and quit trying to make it do something it doesn't want to!

My book club is reading The Stepford Wives this month! OMG, it is so creepy! But it is so short I am almost finished. I can't wait to get together and talk about it. Have you read any good books lately?

 

Friday Facts

*Tuesday I started training at my new job! I had to laugh because they are teaching me how to open the House Museum and most of what I had to do was sweep and dust! I don't even like to do that in my own house! ;)
*Wednesday teen daughter started two online classes, American Literature and Algebra II. I feel like I am taking the classes too!
*Tropical storm Andrea decided to come by! Luckily we didn't get any damage here in my neck of the woods. 
*Today the sun is actually shinning and I think I can actually see blue sky! It's been awhile.
*Tomorrow morning teen daughter is taking the ACT. She wanted to take it once before she leaves for France. I told her that if she gets a certain score I will buy her a pair of Jack Rogers in clemson colors. Is it wrong to bribe your kids to do well on ? I don't think so! :)
*My To Do list is starting to dwindle!
*My family is coming down to Fripp Island for the week, starting Sunday. Since my parents sold their beach house they have decided to find a place to rent for a week in the summer and everyone get together. With all the checks that have been flying out our door, I just couldn't find extra money to go in with them! Husband doesn't like the beach and wouldn't take off work to spend it with my family (which I totally understand) and teen son didn't want to miss work since he'll be off most of the next week to go to his college orientation. So that just left daughter and I. And I just said no. We will go visit next saturday and celebrate Father's Day then.

We Survived and We Now Have One Child Out of High School

Yes, it's been a week since graduation, but the last of our house guests just left yesterday!

Mr. "What kind of fun do you have planned" ended up coming on the morning of graduation! He and his sister, his 11 year old and sister's son rode together. They pretty much stayed out of my way (which they've known me for 36 years so they know how I can get when I feel stressed). And, no, I didn't plan anything fun for him to do! I offered to take them to Middleton Place on Sunday but they said they needed to get back to Charlotte by 4:00, so that didn't work.

 I found a quick way to get to the coliseum that most people didn't know about so we drove right into the parking lot with NO traffic, unlike those coming in on another street!

Graduation went well. Except for the fact that according to the diagram that son brought home he would be sitting towards the end of the row on the left side of the coliseum. We all went to seats on that side, which were up in the nosebleed section! Wouldn't you know when he walked in he was sitting on the complete opposite side from where we were sitting! And since we were so high up I really couldn't see him very well. During the WHOLE thing I thought he was the boy sitting next to him. It wasn't until he went up to get his diploma that I realized I had been watching the wrong kid the whole time! It's probably good that it wasn't him, because I was getting really ticked off at him because he kept leaning over his knees like he was falling asleep and taking his cap off and playing with it!

While we were at the ceremony my sweet friend/neighbor came to the house and warmed up food and set everything out for us so that when we got home all the food was ready! She was a lifesaver!

My husband's cousin, who is teen son's age, came from Miami for graduation and stayed the week after. I spent much of last week driving them back and forth to the beach!
Her birthday was on Thursday so we took her out for a birthday dinner and then when we got home we had cupcakes and she opened her gifts I had for her. 

Saturday I drove her to my in-laws in Myrtle Beach. She spent the night with them so she could catch an 8:00 flight on Spirit Air back home. Teen daughter rode with me and we drove right back home so she could babysit that night! By Sunday I was so tired of driving!
Friday daughter finally made contact with her french family! And on Saturday morning they spent almost 2 hours chatting on FB. As well as someone who doesn't speak french could speak with someone who doesn't speak english! Actually some of the children do speak some english so they helped translate! Daughter was so excited to talk to them. 
So today I decided to send the french mom a message on FB and we spent a little while chatting! They hosted a student from Chile one year and she didn't speak any french before she got there. They said at the end of her second month in France, she could speak and understand! Only 3 months until daughter leaves! 
Tomorrow I start my real job at Middleton Place! I am really just training now but will eventually work two days a week, I think. I am excited about it and having a little mad money won't be too shabby!
